Oral Pathology | West Bloomfield, MI
The inside of the mouth is normally lined with a special type of skin (mucosa) that is smooth and coral pink in color. Any alteration in this appearance could be a warning sign for a pathological process. The most serious of these is oral cancer. The following can be signs at the beginning of a pathologic process or cancerous growth:
- Reddish patches (erythroplasia) or whitish patches (leukoplakia) in the mouth.
- A sore that fails to heal and bleeds easily.
- A lump or thickening on the skin lining the inside of the mouth.
- Chronic sore throat or hoarseness. Difficulty in chewing or swallowing.
These changes can be detected on the lips, cheeks, palate, and gum tissue around the teeth, tongue, face and/or neck. Pain does not always occur with pathology, and curiously, is not often associated with oral cancer. However, any patient with facial and/or oral pain without an obvious cause or reason may also be at risk for oral cancer.
We would recommend performing an oral cancer self-examination monthly and remember that your mouth is one of your body’s most important warning systems. Do not ignore suspicious lumps or sores. Please contact us so we may help.

The work was performed efficiently, my questions and concerns were cheerfully addressed, and I would happily go back again. I was especially impressed with the friendly, caring people there. Also, I was impressed with the use of technology there. Large screen monitors in the examination room with patient data, insurance information quickly available and so forth.

Dr. Cohen is an absolutely "awesome" oral surgeon. He extracted a molar because I was in such severe pain. Dr. Cohen showed compassion and was very gentle, yet very efficient at the same time. He is definitely a "miracle worker!" I thank him from the bottom of my heart for making the surgery such a success! My recovery time went smoothly and I am gratefu and very thankful that I have found such a wonderful oral surgeon. Thanks again Dr. Cohen and may God bless you! Sincerely, Carol F.

What can I say? Dr. Cohen and staff are simply the best. I have a rare disease inside my mouth and have needed close attention and multiple biopsies and surgeries for the last 6 1/2 years. Dr. Cohen and his wonderful staff have been with me the whole way. I was referred to Dr. Cohen in January 2010 by my dermatologist. He told me I needed to have a biopsy and he called Dr. Cohen's office. It was done that same day! I am so grateful he made that call to Dr. Cohen. This experience has been less traumatic for me and my family because of his professionalism, kindness and empathy. Thank you Dr. Cohen and your entire staff!!
